Acrobat Reader used to be available from Ubuntu Partner repository, but it is not available anymore in Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal!
So you have to download the .deb package from adobe.com and install it:
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.1/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.1-1_i386linux_enu.deb
However, if you have a 64bit system, do not forget to install also these packages:

sudo apt-get install libxml2:i386 ia32-libs |
Otherwise, acroread will fail
acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Sadly, it also requires libgtk2.0-0:i386 which depends on libcairo2:i386 which, when I would choose to install it, would for some reason remove about half the OS (1.4 Gig of packages, why? no idea…) which I’m not prepared to say ‘Y’ on.
which packages does it want to remove?
are you using plain ubuntu?
Tks Lorenzo but on Xubuntu 12.10 x64 I also had to do this:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
which I got from here:

now it works!

I had not realized that because ia32-libs was already installed in my system, probably because I had installed gcc-multilib

Hi Lorenzo, unfortunately your answer no more work for Ubuntu 14.04 64bits : I can’t install ia32-libs which seems unavailable. Do you have an idea ?
